Sometimes birds take a back seat

I do love this time of year for birding. You start to see increases in migrants, often just passing through, and the breeding birds are starting to mature into their summer finery. But sometimes you need to put the camera down and just enjoy the day.

My back is playing me up. For those who don’t know I have a bad lower back, dehydrated and bulging disks, as well as one leg shorter than the other and hyper-mobility, this often causes me quite a bit of pain. And so as much as I would have loved to head out with all my gear and photograph some of the local birds in the glorious Milton Keynes sunshine (yup it’s lovely here today) my back just was not up to carrying around all my gear.

So instead I though I would pop out with just my bins and macro lens and see what was about. You know capture spring in action.

The Walk

And so it was I wandered briefly around the lake this morning capturing buds as the emerged, black thorn flowers (always the first bush round here to be in full bloom) and odd small creatures that all need identifying (currently). Lots of pretty pics today but not many words sorry, I’m off to pop some pills (pain meds) and lie flat on the floor for a while.

Here in Normandy, France our blackthorn is out and birds there are birds a plenty to be seen and heard. This time of year I love to hear the screech of circling buzzards, the tap tap tap of woodpeckers and the excited chatter of the sparrows as the squabble over nest materials and sites. We occasionally get some interesting birds here too – I have seen black stork (which are in fact breeding here now) a hoopoe, a black woodpecker and a marsh harrier. It is the anticipation of this time of year I love, knowing you could see/hear anything, from summer migrants to winter visitors, butterflies to bees it is wonderful, and the scent of all the blackthorn is almost over powering I love it.
