National Moth Night

Elephant Hawkmoth - National Moth Night
National Moth Night

So it has been national Moth Night (3rd to 5th July). So Bo and I decided we had better do some moth trapping. I used to post my moth stuff on Mothin’ in the Garden (my old moth site) I have decided to post here as it was a special “mothing” occasion.

National Moth Night

It is always a thrill to open the moth trap first thing, you really do never know what you are going to find in there, there could be nothing or there could be lots of really exciting and interesting moths that send a thrill through you.

National Moth Night The Highlights

The highlights in the trap this time were two species of Hawkmoth; Elephant Hawkmoth, my daughters favourite moth and Pine Hawkmoth a first for me (unfortunately not a prime conditioned moth this one, it was well worn and obviously had had a hard short life). The Next excitement was a Scarlet Tiger (yup we have Tigers in my garden!!) this is a truely stunning moth and another new one for me.

Other highlights included a Burnished Brass (a stunning metallic yellow affair), a Smokey Wainscott (not the most exciting but pretty none the less) and The Miller, not the most frequent to my trap.

Anyway, Bo and I always enjoy our moth trapping and I hope you have enjoyed this post giving a small taste into what we may find. Again it just goes to show you don’t need to travel far to see interesting wildlife. I hope you enjoyed the moth photos.

Please feel free to leave me a comment, I really appreciate the interaction and will reply as soon as I can.
